How can cities become a new concrete place to invent, explore, test, and live as open community that is able to face global challenges and at the same time to enhance urban inclusiveness and urban economies?

Cities that use diffuse sensors and open data to understand problems and activate effective solutions, which recycles spaces, infrastructures and landscapes, which stimulates the widespread micro-creativity to create a system, which recovers the productive vitality of urban manufacturing, especially the innovative ones linked to digital transformation, and which finds back the economic power of its port as powerful gateway. A city that increases the vegetal dimension to give concrete answers to climate change, starting from the redevelopment of its forgotten river. Above all an augmented city that would improve its cosmopolitan dimension must refuse top-down traditional masterplan, implementing incremental and adaptive strategies to generate new metabolism instead of waiting for an opportunity, intercepting local, national and international resources within a design of the future and not with ravenous improvisation.

The Cosmopolitan Habitat workshop intends to invite international PhD candidates and students of urban planning and design in order to reflect about the spatial dimension of migration, the morphologies of the space modified by the different human cultures that increasingly identify European cities and to design new spaces of living in the project area: The Historical Centre of Palermo.
